Portuguese Subtitles not flowing to Vimeo

Hi everyone!
In the past weeks, I’ve been adding the Portuguese subtitles to several videos but for some reason the subtitles are not going to Vimeo. Since the Portuguese subtitles are not in Vimeo I’m not able to upload on the PV app.
Is anyone suffering the same issue?
thanks!

Hello Carolina,

Thank you very much for volunteering your Portuguese subtitles with us all these times. Our sincere appreciation for letting us know about this problem.

Normally subtitles done on Amara will automatically go to Vimeo and the Plum Village App itself. But this doesn’t always happen. In such a case, we will need to upload the subtitles ourselves.

Since I couldn’t find any function with which a file can be attached on the forum’s “Reply” screen, would you please kindly email us the Portuguese subtitles you’ve done to the email address I just messaged you?

Thank you very much again for your time and dedication in this meaningful work with all of us.

I hope life has been kind to you, and I look forward to hearing from you.
A flower to you,
:hibiscus:

Dear Carolina and Tuyen,

We have also communicated over email, but in case anyone was reading this…

Yes, there was a problem with syncing the subtitles from Amara to Vimeo and the Plum Village App. Yesterday evening I was able to look into it and fix the issue. So everything should be working properly now.

Thank you both for following up with this, and for the amazing work you are both doing!

Hi @Justin_Emery !

Sorry to disturb, but I’m afraid this is happening again.

Can you kindly take a look?

Thanks!

@Carolina_Marinho Thank you, I will look into it early next week.

@Carolina_Marinho I have taken a look and fixed syncing issues with two specific videos:

https://web.plumvillage.app/item/mindful-of-feelings-or-immersive-meditation-guided-by-brother-phap-linh - there was a problem with it in our database which I fixed - I will investigate further if it happens again.

https://web.plumvillage.app/item/class-10-the-basic-concentrations-impermanence-no-self-and-nirvaṇa - for this one, the problem was that the subtitles were too long for the video. There was just one extra subtitle line that was present after the end of the video. I removed this on Amara, and now it syncs correctly.

If there are any others you noticed which are not syncing, please share a link and I will take a look.

Thank you for the awesome work you are doing :folded_hands:

Hi Justin!

I have the following ones:

How to Hear the Call of Mother Earth: Thundering Silence | Thich Nhat Hanh (short teaching video)

The Buddha Is the Sitting | Thich Nhat Hanh (short teaching video)

Hope it helps to understand the issue.

Thanks!

Hi @Carolina_Marinho ,

I took a look at the videos you listed and they should all be synced with the subtitles now.

In general the problem in these cases was that we had not linked them to a YouTube source video and Amara video in our database.

You may be able to fix such cases yourself if you spot them, since you have access to our admin panel. Otherwise I will try to find time myself soon to identify other videos where the videos are not linked.

Hey! Jumping in as well :3
I’m having a similar problem with the video “Healing the Past in the Present”, which I see both Carolina and I have added subtitles to (hii)
I’ve uploaded it on my own amara since it was not present on the platform yet. It’s not on Youtube (is this the problem?), so I’ve fetched it from Vimeo. Seeing the automatic syncing was not working - it is indeed working with the other video I added to my amara though - I manually uploaded the subtitles on Vimeo since I have access to our shared account. Now it is weird because the subtitles do show up in the editor on admin-v2, but they do not end up appearing on the app itself :woman_shrugging:
Thanks for all the continuous support! :purple_heart:

Hi dear @Chloe_Rossi ,

Thank you very much for informing us of your situation.

Amara used to allow the subtitles of videos uploaded and subtitled using a personal Amara account to show on the YouTube channel of another entity.

However, this changed for the past couple of years, and now only works for videos uploaded to an Amara account that is directly linked to the entity’s YouTube channel.

Videos available on the app but not on YouTube will be of a lower priority than those available on both (and they will also most likely encounter other layers of limitations and issues syncing/showing subtitles as you’re experiencing.)

For now, I suggest that you focus on videos available on both, while waiting for further investigation from our team. Would that be ok for you?:pink_heart:

Since Vimeo is managed by other team members, I wonder if @Justin_Emery or @Anca_Rusu could take as much time as they need to have a look, investigate, and help us out.

Thank you very much, dear Chloe, Justin, and Anca :tulip:

Much appreciation to you all,

:pink_heart::folded_hands:

@Chloe_Rossi Indeed there was an issue with syncing the subtitles this week to the service provider we use to serve the videos. Now it is fixed so you should see the subtitles in the app.

I am also aware that subtitling process is not so smooth when there is no associated YouTube video. I do not have a solution for that yet but will be giving it some thought. Thank you!

@Tuyen @Justin_Emery Thank you both! The subtitles still do not appear on the app, so I guess I’ll just drop it and only translate videos which are also present on Youtube. To be clear, with the other video I mentioned uploading on my own Amara things worked fine! I guess the only difference seems to be that this other one is also on Youtube, but other than that using one’s personal Amara does seem to work :folded_hands:

@Chloe_Rossi Which video is it that you do not see subtitles for in the app?

Is it Healing the Past in the Present - Plum Village ?

This one is showing Italian subtitles for me. It can take about 1-2 seconds for them to load in however.

@Justin_Emery it is indeed working for me too now! Thanks for the help! :folded_hands::fox:
